Curriculum
Languages
In the Languages department we aim to develop a passion for the learning of other languages and to foster a real interest in the country of study and, where this is the classical world, an appreciation of its relevance today.
Lessons are varied, inclusive and entertaining. Pupils are encouraged to collaborate and share their ideas, and to become active and inquisitive learners who are responsible for their own learning. There is often a creative element to the content of lessons, in addition to a focus on high achievement.
French is taught from Reception by specialist teachers and Latin is taught from Year 6 upwards. Greek is offered on a selective basis to pupils in Years 7&8.
Although all languages rely heavily on rigorous learning of words and grammatical rules, pupils also embrace aspects of foreign culture and history to anchor their learning and provide it with purpose within a wider context.
