Top Journalist Visits NHP
In heart-warming and inspiring assemblies this week, all the children were treated to a captivating talk by Benji Hall who shared his extraordinary story of resilience and determination after a life-changing accident.
Benji took the children on a journey through his remarkable career as a journalist, where he documented some of his experiences: from providing coverage of the Royal Wedding, to travelling through rivers in darkness to places people haven’t been before, to find news to report!
It was his personal story of resilience and fortitude that truly left a lasting impression on the children. Benji’s life took an unexpected turn when he was involved in a terrible accident during his time in a war-torn region.
What made Benji’s talk truly inspirational was not the tragedy itself, but how he responded to it. He shared his journey of overcoming despair and self-doubt, undergoing extensive rehabilitation, and adapting to a new way of life. His message was clear: life may throw unexpected challenges our way, but it is our response to these challenges that defines us.
Benji’s resilience and determination were contagious, and the children were inspired by his story. He emphasised the importance of having a positive attitude, setting goals, and never giving up on your dreams, no matter the obstacles that may come your way.
As Benji concluded his assemblies, he left the children with a sense of empowerment, encouraging them to believe in their own potential and the ability to overcome any hurdles that life might present. His powerful message of resilience and optimism resonated deeply with all, leaving the children (and staff) inspired and ready to face the challenges that lie ahead. Thank you, Benji!

National Poetry Day Celebrations
Across the school this week poetry has rung out: softly, confidently, from comfy carpets, in front of rapt audiences, from beings small and tall. National Poetry Day encourages people all over the country to make, experience, and share poetry. This week we focused keenly on sharing: on finding common ground and communal enjoyment through language. In the past month, all pupils at NHP have been busy learning a poem by heart. Children in the Upper School visited the OB this week to meet with a Lower School class. Each class performed a poetry recital for the other, sharing not just a poem, but words of respect and encouragement too. Our visits culminated with Upper School children reading poetry books to lower school children, an activity loved by all. Our week was crowned by a visit from Colville Primary School, with whom we were excited to share a morning of poetry recitals. We gathered together in mixed year groups, spotting friends from opposite schools and giving sunny greetings to unfamiliar faces. Quite separately over the past month, pupils at Colville and NHP have been perfecting the same poems to share and perform together. What a joyful spectacle it was to see them collaborate in performance, speaking as one voice through their poems and entertaining us all so thoroughly with their spirited recitals. Brave trios and duos from Year 3, 4, and 5 performed for us too, and their peers praised their confidence and sensitive interpretation. Thank you so much to staff and pupils at Colville Primary School at NHP for making this year’s National Poetry Day one to remember.
Adventure Weekend Fun
Last weekend, 20 children from Years 4-8 joined us on an adventure to Bryanston School in Dorset. The children experienced an action packed weekend which saw them horse riding and learning from the experts how to be the perfect groom; picking their hooves, washing their tails and brushing their coats, as well as clearing out and cleaning their stalls! It was wonderful to see how much the children progressed, from tentatively mounting their horse to confidently trotting round the arena by the end of the session. In addition to this, the children ventured into the woods for a Forest School session, learning how to use tools safely to create some beautiful jewellery as well as a fantastic bug hotel and bird hide that we were able to bring back for our NHP woodland. The highlight for many was our Saturday film night, where the children cosied up on bean bags with hot chocolate and marshmallows to watch Matilda. On Sunday morning, children were able to select their activity, with some choosing to learn a new skill at the skateboarding park, while others took part in the competitive forest treasure hunt. Sadly, the weekend had to come to an end, and after one final fantastic lunch served down by the river, we had to pack up our coach and head home. Overall, the weekend was a great success and the children’s feedback was overwhelmingly positive. We will be running more adventure weekends in the spring term so keep your eyes on the newsletter for the opportunity to sign up!
Year 3 Trip to Whipsnade
Children in 3C have shared some of their highlights of their trip to Whipsnade Zoo
Isaac
Yesterday, Year 3 went to Whipsnade Zoo for a school trip! We saw the cheeky chimps, lovely lemurs and a rolling otter. I really enjoyed the trip! My favourite part was seeing the lemurs sleeping.
Chloé
Yesterday, I went to Whipsnade Zoo. I saw 3 giraffes while we were up high observing them! We observed a giraffe named Bashu. We had a timer and every 15 seconds, we had to check what he was doing at that time. I also saw penguins and emperor penguins! Some were swimming, others were waddling and others were picking at their feathers with their beaks. We had so much fun!
Sofia
On our trip, we started off by going to see the chimps! We learnt about how clever they are. There was a lady who did a big talk about the chimps. They are so clever and they know how to open cans! Can you believe that? Next, we went to see the bison. I took a look and they were fed a lot! Because of this, they were very big and a bit stinky! Next, we went to see the penguins. We saw two different types and they were so cute! We did a giraffe workshop to learn about how they eat and behave. I really enjoyed my trip.
Year 5 Author Visit
The Year 5 pupils were delighted to welcome the author and NHP parent, Georgia Byng to NHP. She shared her insights on the art of writing and unveiled the creative process behind her captivating new book, ‘Albi and the Glowing Cow Boy.’ We gathered in the JCB hall, where Georgia captured the children’s imagination by showing them newspaper cuttings about a 97-year-old man who jumped out of a plane and a paper plane she had found on the street with a mysterious message inside it. Her warm and engaging presence, coupled with her enchanting explanations of her storytelling process, left the Year 5s brimming with ideas and enthusiastic to come up with their own stories.
