Cheltenham College Maths Competition
On Tuesday 6th February, Notting Hill Prep returned to Cheltenham College for their annual maths competition. The children worked collaboratively on a range of tasks, which included a group round, a logic puzzle, a set of sequential questions where no communication was allowed and a team relay race. They displayed wonderful enthusiasm, admirable resilience and communicated with clarity as they competed against 9 other schools! The children were a credit to NHP and should be extremely proud of their efforts. A special congratulations to the Year 6 team for finishing as runners-up – a marvellous achievement!

All the way from Princeton University, USA, the Tigertones all male a cappella group visited NHP for the fourth time on Friday morning. What a treat they had in store for the whole school! Singing beautiful arrangements, including songs by The Beatles, Harry Connick Jr, Van Morrison and Leonard Cohen, the ensemble had the children and staff enthralled from first note to last. Self-effacing, witty, soulful yet impeccably well-prepared, the Tigertones are an inspiration to us all. Their performance yet again reiterated for me the importance of singing and how much happiness it brings to performer and listener alike. A special mention must go to Oi Leng, mother of Lena (Year 6) and Mika (Year 3) a Princeton alumna, who helped arrange this unforgettable event!

On Monday, we embarked on a captivating trip to the historic Tower of London. Transported back in time to the Tudor era, Year 4 delved into the fascinating tales of Henry VIII’s wives. The day was filled with interesting facts and stories, and we explored the White Tower to view Henry VIII’s weaponry and armour. We were also lucky enough to view the impressive crown jewels – a highlight for many of the Year 4 pupils!
“We went to see the crown jewels. It was so cool to see the deep blue sapphires and to imagine walking into class draped in red velvet gowns.” Arthur H
“We learnt a rhyme for the six wives of Henry VIII – divorced, beheaded, died, divorced, beheaded, survived!” – Errol
“My favourite part was when I had to act as Anne Boleyn. It was very fun until I realised that I was going to have my head chopped off!” – Paloma
“I loved how our guide acted out the events of Henry VIII’s wives – it made the workshop very interesting and fun!” – Lochie

On Wednesday 22nd November, we welcomed 30 guests from Age UK to NHP to enjoy an afternoon of festive cheer. Our visitors thoroughly enjoyed a brilliant pantomime performance of Little Red Riding Hood from our Year 3s, with lots of audience interaction – they couldn’t have asked for a better first dress rehearsal! Afterwards, our Year 6 and staff volunteers served up a spread of sandwiches, cakes, fruits, tea and coffee a plenty, whilst pupils from Years 4, 6 and 7 delivered beautiful musical performances on the violin and piano. A big thank you to all our volunteers for making sure our guests had everything they needed and enjoyed a lovely afternoon chatting with everyone. On Tuesday, staff and pupils at NHP enjoyed wearing odd socks in support of Anti-Bullying Week. The Anti-Bullying Alliance in the UK established the day to get children and adults alike to be brave and stand up against bullying. The idea for Odd Socks Day is that it’s not bad to stand out, and kids can be proud of their uniqueness and differences. In lessons, we discussed how we can be kinder to one another and the importance of creating an inclusive environment both inside and outside school.

We kicked off the week on a high note as our Year 4 children were treated to an inspiring author talk. NHP was thrilled to welcome Mark Walden, a highly recommended author from the library network. Mark’s passion for igniting the love for reading in children, especially in boys aged nine and above, was evident in his engaging session.
Mark didn’t rely on props or PowerPoint presentations; instead, he skillfully transported the children into the captivating world of H.I.V.E with his words alone. His enthusiasm was contagious, and he had everyone on the edge of their seats, brimming with questions and imaginative ideas. The discussion he facilitated was brilliant as the students shared their favourite villains, dissecting why they thought these characters were villains in the first place.
But the real magic happened when Mark read a passage from the first book of the H.I.V.E series. The room was filled with laughter, but more impressively, every child was hanging on to every word, absorbed in the tale. Mark also generously shared his insights into his writing process, his sources of inspiration, and offered a glimpse into some of his other literary works, such as Earthfall. Our Year 4 children had the opportunity to ask some fantastic questions, making the session even more enriching.
The author talk with Mark Walden was a great experience for Year 4, and it reinforced the power of storytelling and the joy of reading. We’re excited to see how this inspiring encounter will spark their imaginations and passion for books going forward.
